Guitarist // Composer
2-time JUNO Award winner. Lead guitarist for Voivod. Co-founder of Martyr. Session work with Gorguts, Cryptopsy & more.
Daniel "Chewy" Mongrain is a Canadian guitarist whose technical prowess and compositional vision have shaped the sound of progressive and technical metal for over three decades.
Born July 4, 1976, in Quebec, Dan picked up his first guitar at age 12 and was playing shows and teaching by 14. In 1989, at just 13 years old, he co-founded Martyr with his brother François, pioneering the technical death metal genre.
His nickname "Chewy" came from a friend who noted his habit of screaming loudly in an annoying voice tone. Combined with his long hair and 6-foot height, the Chewbacca comparison was inevitable.
In 2008, Dan joined the legendary Voivod, replacing the late Denis D'Amour. His most life-changing show was seeing Voivod on the Nothingface tour in 1990 at age 13—his first metal show ever. Full circle.
